Creating a Welcoming and Prayerful Community

The Ushers and Welcomers Ministry plays an important role in the life of our parish. Very often, an usher or welcomer is the first person someone meets when they arrive at church. A warm greeting, a friendly smile and a willingness to assist can make a significant difference, particularly for visitors, new parishioners, families with children, the elderly, or those returning to the Church after some time away.

This ministry is much more than handing out newsletters or assisting with collections. Ushers and welcomers help create an atmosphere in which people feel welcome, valued and at home. They assist with seating, provide practical guidance, support the orderly movement of the congregation, assist during collections and Communion when required, and respond calmly to practical needs that may arise during Mass.

Their ministry allows the priest, liturgical ministers and congregation to concentrate more fully on the celebration of the Eucharist. In this way, hospitality itself becomes an expression of the Gospel: welcoming others as Christ welcomes us.

An Invitation to Serve

At Divine Mercy Parish Wallsend–Shortland, we are grateful to have committed teams of ushers and welcomers serving at most of our weekend Masses. However, we particularly need additional volunteers for the Sunday 5.30 pm Mass at St Patrick’s, Wallsend.

This is a simple but valuable ministry requiring a welcoming heart and a willingness to serve. Training and guidance will be provided.

We warmly invite parishioners of all ages to consider joining our Ushers and Welcomers Team and helping us make every person who enters our churches feel genuinely welcome.
