Proclaiming God’s Word with Faith, Clarity and Reverence

The Ministry of the Word, often known as the ministry of Readers or Lectors, is an important liturgical ministry in the life of the Church. At Mass, the reader does much more than simply read words from a page. The reader is entrusted with proclaiming the Word of God to the gathered community, allowing the Scriptures to be heard, understood and received in faith.

When Sacred Scripture is proclaimed in the liturgy, God speaks to His people. For this reason, readers should approach their ministry with prayer, preparation, reverence and a genuine desire to serve. A well-prepared proclamation helps the congregation listen attentively and allows the meaning and beauty of the biblical text to speak to the hearts of those gathered.

Preparing to Proclaim

Good proclamation begins well before Mass. Readers should go through the readings in advance and practise them carefully. It is important to understand the passage, identify unfamiliar names or words, consider the meaning of the text, and recognise where pauses and emphasis are naturally required.

A reader should not rush. The Scriptures should be proclaimed clearly, confidently and at an appropriate pace, allowing the congregation time to hear, understand and absorb the message. Good pronunciation, suitable volume, natural expression and appropriate pauses are all important elements of effective proclamation.

Readers should also learn to use the microphone confidently and correctly. This includes positioning themselves at an appropriate distance from the microphone and listening carefully to how their voice is being amplified through the church. Developing an awareness of one’s own volume is an important skill. Depending on the acoustics of the church and the quality or settings of the PA system, a reader may need to project the voice more strongly or reduce the volume. Speaking too softly can make the Word difficult to hear, while speaking too loudly into a sensitive microphone can cause distortion and become uncomfortable for the congregation.

Good proclamation therefore requires not only preparation of the Scripture passage, but also an awareness of the church environment and sound system. With practice, readers learn to adjust their voice, pace, distance from the microphone and projection so that the Word of God can be heard clearly throughout the church. The purpose is always the same: not to draw attention to the reader, but to enable the congregation to listen attentively to God speaking through the Sacred Scriptures.

At the same time, proclamation is not a dramatic performance. Excessive expression or theatrical presentation can distract from the Word itself. The aim is to communicate the sacred text naturally and prayerfully so that attention remains on God’s Word rather than on the reader.

A Ministry of Faith and Service

Readers should arrive early, check the Lectionary and assigned reading, become familiar with the microphone, and be ready before the liturgy begins. Appropriate dress, respectful movement around the sanctuary and reverence towards the sacred space are also part of this ministry.

Above all, a reader should become personally familiar with the Scriptures. When the Word has first been prayed, reflected upon and received by the reader, it can be proclaimed with greater understanding and conviction.

At Divine Mercy Parish Wallsend–Shortland, we are grateful to all who faithfully serve as Readers. We also warmly encourage parishioners who have a clear speaking voice and a willingness to prepare prayerfully to consider joining our Proclaimers of the Word.

Training and guidance will be provided. Through this beautiful ministry, you can help our parish community to listen to God, encounter Christ in His Word, and carry that Word into daily life.
